UCSB Graduate Student Shines in the Spotlight

One of our own graduate students here at UCSB, Annia Rodriguez, has made an important advance in Biochemistry providing greater understanding of the "code of life" that has not only earned her a publication but also a spotlight in the local online newspaper, Edhat. If you'd like to read more about Annia's great work, check out the full article here.

UCI Study on Latina/o Population Growth in California

A recent study conducted by Dr. Leo Chavez, professor of anthropology at UC Irvine, shows that after the recent census, California's 18-and-under population now had Latinas/os as the majority. The implications from this study are significant if you consider the current socio-political climate.

If you'd like to hear the audio and/or read the article, please follow the link below. I hope you find the article and findings as interesting as I did.

A Day in the Life: Nadine R. Martinez Rodriguez

Here at The Graduate Post, we are developing  a new series of stories that will spotlight some of our outstanding graduate students. We are calling it “A Day in the Life” and just like its name implies, we are hoping to gain an authentic look at our unique graduate students’ daily lives.   Please let us know what you think!

A Day in the Life

Name:  Nadine R. Martinez Rodriguez

Discipline / Emphasis: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology/ My emphasis is studying underwater adhesives on various surfaces.

Research Interests / Goals: My interests are in the basic sciences as well as immunology. My goal is to become a professor with a research lab.

Nadine Martinez Rodriguez is a Ph.D. student within the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology Department and an amazing single mother of five.  She hails from Huntington Park, CA and earned her A.A. from East Los Angeles College and her B.S. and M.S. from California State University, Los Angeles.  Under the direction of Dr. Jacob Israelachvili and Dr. Herbert Waite, her research project involves the understanding of behavioral, physical and biological aspects of underwater adhesive produced by marine mussels.

Let’s get to know Nadine a little better…

WHAT'S IT LIKE BEING ONE OF THE FEW WOMEN OF COLOR IN THE MCDB DISCIPLINE?

It's very different in comparison to when I was working on my masters in Los Angeles. I can't get into the politics of if, but I must say that more is expected of you and I find it tiresome to constantly prove I belong. I was talking with my sister the other day and I told her that I have to own it. I walk into rooms on this campus and I take with me the confidence that I have every right to be here like everyone else. It has worked for me and if I didn’t belong, I wouldn’t be here to begin with.

WHAT'S YOUR DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR CAREER GOALS/OBJECTIVES?

My driving forces are my children. I didn't have anyone to tell me to go to college. I had to figure it out on my own. It was even more difficult when I needed help and I couldn't go to my family because they had no clue to what I was doing. I want my children to know that when they go to college, they will have at least one parent that can help them achieve their goal. My oldest wants to get her Ph.D. in Astronomy. Now if that's not driving force, then I don't know what is.

NAME THE ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?

The accomplishment that I am most proud of is being a role model to my children and my siblings. When I was little, I didn’t even know what was a Masters or PhD. My parents didn’t have high school diplomas and my mother tried very hard to help as much as she could. My brother and sister are now working on their advanced degrees. Now, my children tell me that they want that level of education as well. I couldn’t ask for more.

HOW DO YOU DO IT WITH 5 KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 10?

We use the buddy system and the grace of god. I can’t imagine going to school and not having this type of system in place. The older ones will help the younger ones with their most basic needs. My buddy is the baby, followed by the oldest and younger girl together and then seven year old and four year old are a pair. I also, get a lot of help from my oldest daughter. She is amazing! She helps out a lot with the younger kids. She will wash the dishes and she loves bathing the baby, but she usually will help with her little sister. My oldest son helps a lot as well. He usually will help take the trash out and clean the living room. It’s amazing what kids are willing to do. They love to help and I think its one way to prepare them to be successful and independent adults.

WHAT MAKES YOU, YOU?

That’s a tough question. I think my kids largely define me. I am happy when they are and largely motivated on making them better people. I am a strong believer in that kids learn by example. I can tell them what to do and how to do it, but if they don’t see me practicing what I say, then I can’t expect anything great from them.

I am constantly striving to make myself a better person and I want to be the best that I can be. I value family the most and I have a lot of friends that I consider the family as well. I love helping them out and being around them. This makes me a humble person.  Being a mother makes me very caring, not only for my children but for all of those around me. In all, I am a regular old people pleaser.

FAVORITE MUSIC ARTIST?

I don’t have any favorite music artist.  I pretty much like anything that sounds good.  My kids and I are often in the car, so we have our own little glee club. Everyone sings and it’s so much fun.  We also play “Rock Band.”  We love anything from rock to country to hip-hop/rap.

GUILTY PLEASURES?

Watching Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. G, The First 48 Hours, Jeopardy and Glee; On DVR of course!

ANY ADVICE OR FINAL THOUGHTS?

I just want people to know that you don’t have to hold out on life. You can do multiple things at once. Having a family and going to school is only as difficult as you make it. Of course, you are not going to have nice vacations or nice things, but you get to come home and see a part of you in these little people and having them run up to you saying “Mommie” is the GREATEST. Being there for the first time with discovering their hands, walking, winning a race, getting their first straight A’s and hearing them tell each other “I love you” is priceless.
